isoHunt and lawsuit from MPAA - 12:39 pm
they're getting free promotion from MPAA ;)
Internet , News - DaRen
Famous BitTorrent indexing/searching website, isoHunt, is temporarily (shut) down because of the the lawsuit by MPAA. This is what they're announcing on their website:
Update, Jan. 16, 2007
Lawyers from our primary ISP decided to pull our plug without any advance notice, as of 14:45 PST. No doubt related to our lawsuit brought by the MPAA, but we don't have more information at this time until people responsible comes to work tomorrow. We will be back in operation once we sort out this mess with our current ISP, or we get new hardware ready at our new ISP.
Sit back and enjoy the rest of the internet in the mean time, while it last. For your torrent searching needs, try Google for now by searching for "SEARCH TERMS ext:torrent".
You can also come hang around our IRC channel (SSL on port +7000). We'll update on this page and on IRC when we have more information.
If you wish to help us out financially, you can donate via Paypal from the button below. Due to prior dis-taste from certain individuals misusing legal funds for their own purposes however, this is not a legal defense fund. Your donations will be used for the operational costs of our servers and development of our websites. You have our sincere thanks.
- The isoHunt crew
That's a sad thing, they're just merely a search engine and isn't hosting any infringing files on its own. Below is some of the latest news from the crews:
Update, Jan. 17
FYI, since this is a common topic, no, moving servers to Sweden or Sealand isn't going to help. I have no intention of hiding our servers (not that I have anything against Sweden, I love IKEA). BitTorrent was created for distribution of any large media file, and we stand by that ideal as a search engine and aggregator. Our current ISP is in the US. Our new ISP is in Canada, where this temporary page is being served. Depending on whether we get our servers back in the US, we will be back in full operation sooner or later.
07:40 PST - SecretSquirrel
So after screwing around with our gigabit switch for a few hours, I've given up on one particular task and I'm moving on, hopefully we'll have our data back today, because if we do, we should be at least halfway back up by friday. If we don't get our data back from our previous provider, it may take a little longer to come back live again, but we are working on it, so be patient. :-)
12:45 PST - IH
We are moving house. If the tubes run smoothly, we expect to be back in full swing tomorrow.
Where is the cute donkey ?? - 12:31 pm
eDonkey is history ??
Internet , News - DaRen
Another file-sharing is targeted and ordered to shutdown by recording industries.
Quote:The firm behind popular online file-sharing software eDonkey has agreed to pay $30 million to avoid potential copyright infringement lawsuits from the recording industry, according to court documents filed Tuesday.
...
New York-based MetaMachine was one of seven technology firms to receive letters from the recording industry last fall warning them to shut down or prepare to face lawsuits.
...
Under terms of the latest agreement, MetaMachine and its top executives, Sam Yagan and Jed McCaleb, agreed to immediately cease distributing eDonkey, eDonkey 2000, Overnet and other software versions.
Sad ending I would say. $30 million to avoid lawsuits ? I guess that's another alternate way how the recording industries are making(milking) money. Anyway, on yesterday, the eDonkey website is wipe out clean, only leaving a message behind:
Quote:
The eDonkey2000 Network is no longer available.
If you steal music or movies, you are breaking the law.
Courts around the world -- including the United States Supreme Court --
have ruled that businesses and individuals can be prosecuted for illegal
downloading.
You are not anonymous when you illegally download copyrighted material.
Your IP address is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and has been logged.
Respect the music, download legally.
Goodbye Everyone.
Goodbye, eDonkey! I think LimeWire will joined you pretty soon since the recording companies filed a copyright infringement lawsuit LimeWire back in August.

Another Dell notebook on fire - 2:53 pm
Model: Latitude C600 (oh well, 2nd hand)
Computing , Hardware , News - DaRen
Dell notebook with battery problem Another alert message to all Dell notebook users out there: A family from Leicestershire in England was left in shock after their Dell laptop exploded "like fireworks" and set fire to their carpet and lounge.
According to a story in the Leicester Mercury, Shaun Allen, 39, said the drama experienced by him, his wife and children. The offending laptop was a Dell Latitude C600 bought from a shop in Coventry, about a year before for about £500.
Quote:
"There are six batteries inside a compartment, and they were shooting out like fireworks, like rockets. "
"They even bounced off the ceiling, they went up that high."
"I tried to extinguish the laptop and cover it over with a towel. I tried to carry it outside, but it was still exploding and I let go of it."
"As I dropped it, more batteries came out like fireworks. A couple of them hit the ceiling then bounced on the floor. Another one hit the ceiling and set fire to the carpet. My wife was jumping on it to put it out."
An investigator examined the Allens' laptop.
A Dell spokesman said that although they believed the battery which exploded was not the original supplied by Dell, the company was supplying a new laptop as a gesture of goodwill for the family's co-operation with the investigation.
Last month, Dell formally requested 4.1m customers around the world return batteries shipped with its notebooks sold between 1 April 2004 and 18 July 2006. The recalled lithium-ion batteries were made by Sony, saying that Dell branded batteries with cells manufactured by Sony could, under rare conditions, overheat
After reading this, should I just remove my battery from notebook? I run it on AC power 24/7 and the weather is starting to turn warm now... This worried me because I'm using a Latitude C640 purchased on 2003, although it does not falls under the time period for recall. I really don't wan't fireworks going on in my room, or even got hit by fireworks...also, did I forgot to mention I got 2 batteries... ? OMG ~~~ !

PC turns 25, Happy Birthday ! - 10:54 am
Computing , Gaming , News , Tech n Science - DaRen
A release photo of the original IBM PC Computer firm IBM made technological history on 12 August 1981 with the announcement of a personal computer - the IBM 5150. Although IBM is not the first that came out with PC or the term "Personal Computer", however the IBM 5150 is the first that successfully gained wide acceptance and this led to global impact on PCs. It's recognised as the ancestor of the modern PC, a crucial step in computers' evolution from expensive geek's play toy to business and home computing. After all these years, PC has significantly changed our lives.
Quote:
Roughly one billion PCs are now in use across the world; many office workers spend more time with their PCs than they do asleep or with their families. But the PC's spread has been uneven: in America there are 70 PCs for every 100 people, compared with 35 in France, 7 in Brazil, and 3 in China.
IBM 5150 came in 3 versions, they cost between $1,565, for a home model, and $4,500, for a machine designed for the office. The $1,565 IMB 5150 had a 4.7Mhz processor, 16K of memory and it comes with keyboard. Disk drives were an optional extra but each 5.25inch disk could hold 160K of data. It included Microsoft's BASIC programming language. The machines could display four different colours of graphics and 24 different colours for text. It also included a built-in mono speaker for music and audio.
Dig Dug What ?! 4.7Mhz and 16k of memory ?! Most of the terms & conditions, license agreements these days are more than 16k even in pure text, on top of that, a click on "Start" on Windows will certainly crashed the 4.7Mhz processor... hehe...
I still remember the days of playing Dig Dug when I'm a kid ~12 years back, I can't remember what kind of PC is that, but the green console text reminds me of Matrix, and we uses 5.25inch disk to load the game. Then I came across a more modern PC, playing Mortal Combat in friend's house. The first game that I ever played on my Pentium 600Mhz desktop was Command & Conquer in DOS mode (greetings to all C&C fans out there). Loved the Lemmings game too back that time. Those little tiny lemmings with green hair with faces that's not visible... they're all nice nostalgia of mine. Again, if you wonder, the game is in DOS mode as well. Hmm, Doom was fun that time but now my Windows XP can't run Doom 1 and I don't even bother to try playing Doom 3 on my notebook, I don't want my notebook to overheat and catch fire.
Anyway, the cheapest model that used to cost $1,565 would cost around $3,500 today (in 2006 figures), taking 25 years of adjustments in the retail price index into account. That's around $AUD 4,500. What can you do with $AUD 4.5k ? Oh boy, you'll pretty spoiled if you have that much of money to spend on a dekstop PC today. Other than high ends computers, you'll probably looking at buying a small server, get a dedicated line and start hosting service... ^^
Salute to those great people who dedicated their time and bringing this great technology to human. Thanks !

Recycled water 'can change fish sex' - 4:24 pm
Will it change humans?
Environment , Funny Stuff , News - DaRen
The debate of whether using recycled water as drinking water or not in some parts of Australia has raise some interesting news. The experts claimed that they are able to purify 99.9999% of the contamination in waste water and turn it into drinking water. However, that's not the problem. The big thing is if you're a male and you drink too much of it, you'll become one of those that is half and half =)
Quote:
Studies had shown high levels of the female sex hormone oestrogen in recycled water, which affected animal life and potentially humans.
"There's quite a significant amount of research with regards to hormones and the effect that is having on the feminisation of fish and other animals that actually drink water, and potentially humans as well," Mr Springborg said.
Geez... I'm pretty cool with drinking recycled water, but hey, if they can't remove/purify those so called female sex hormone oestrogn then I'll be drinking bottle waters then...Great for those who wanted sex changeover for free or people who admire Captain Jack Sparrow's personality/character hehe... Did the rum Jack Sparrow drank consists of recycled water ? ya know... he always drink cheap rums..

Beauty bonus - 5:38 pm
Are you handsome/pretty & tall ?
Funny Stuff , News - DaRen
Interesting article from The Sunday Times via News.com.au
Quote:
BEAUTY may be more than skin deep after all. New research suggests that good-looking people do better in exams and thus probably in later life, than the plain or downright ugly.
Some facts
Quote:
Previous research has shown that better-looking people have more success at job interviews and in finding a spouse.
Don't agree with that ? read more..
Quote:
A survey last year of 11,000 33-year-olds by London Metropolitan University found that unattractive men earned 15 per cent less than those who were deemed attractive, while plain women earned 11 per cent less than their prettier colleagues.
A recent study from the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina found that tall people earned $990 more a year than their shorter colleagues.
Research suggests that tall people do better in life because they are more likely to be chosen for positions of authority - prefects, head boys and head girls - when at school.

FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 is here! Personally Im not crazy about this but gotna "give face" to those socceroos since it's only happening once in 4 years.
Anway, I fell asleep half way watching the World Cup match between Germeny and Costa Rica this morning. Maybe a wide screen plasma TV can keep me this-not-a-big-time-soccer-fan awake for whole night but I'm pretty sure a 21" TV will not !! hehe...
Russian Knights didn't make it - 10:15 pm
Environment , Event , Military , News - DaRen
The Russian Knights aerobatic team didn't fly through Zhang Tian Dong today. The reason is flying through that natural mountain arch will cause damage to the environment and the "hole" itself. I'm kinda disappointed but couldn't agree more on this.
It's fun and exciting watching a fighter aircraft roaring through the archway with speed of 750 Km/h. However, that speed will surely cause damage to Zhang Tian Dong. If they didnt success (it's so narrow that there are only few metres of free space left between both aircraft wing and the "hole"), they'll smashed the Zhang Tian Dong and make headline news for tomorrow. That's not the end of story though. If accident happens, it's a disaster to mother nature's greatest gift... that's something that's un-replaceable even the insurance company is able to pay that huge amount of $$$
Oh well, if they're flying through at low speed, it will be fine but what's the point to watch if they fly slow? These fighther aircraft babies are built solely for speed and destroy. If they can't achieve any of it, they're just a piece of expensive junk.
