isoHunt and lawsuit from MPAA - 12:39 pm
they're getting free promotion from MPAA ;)
Internet , News - DaRen
Famous BitTorrent indexing/searching website, isoHunt, is temporarily (shut) down because of the the lawsuit by MPAA. This is what they're announcing on their website:
Update, Jan. 16, 2007
Lawyers from our primary ISP decided to pull our plug without any advance notice, as of 14:45 PST. No doubt related to our lawsuit brought by the MPAA, but we don't have more information at this time until people responsible comes to work tomorrow. We will be back in operation once we sort out this mess with our current ISP, or we get new hardware ready at our new ISP.
Sit back and enjoy the rest of the internet in the mean time, while it last. For your torrent searching needs, try Google for now by searching for "SEARCH TERMS ext:torrent".
You can also come hang around our IRC channel (SSL on port +7000). We'll update on this page and on IRC when we have more information.
If you wish to help us out financially, you can donate via Paypal from the button below. Due to prior dis-taste from certain individuals misusing legal funds for their own purposes however, this is not a legal defense fund. Your donations will be used for the operational costs of our servers and development of our websites. You have our sincere thanks.
- The isoHunt crew
That's a sad thing, they're just merely a search engine and isn't hosting any infringing files on its own. Below is some of the latest news from the crews:
Update, Jan. 17
FYI, since this is a common topic, no, moving servers to Sweden or Sealand isn't going to help. I have no intention of hiding our servers (not that I have anything against Sweden, I love IKEA). BitTorrent was created for distribution of any large media file, and we stand by that ideal as a search engine and aggregator. Our current ISP is in the US. Our new ISP is in Canada, where this temporary page is being served. Depending on whether we get our servers back in the US, we will be back in full operation sooner or later.
07:40 PST - SecretSquirrel
So after screwing around with our gigabit switch for a few hours, I've given up on one particular task and I'm moving on, hopefully we'll have our data back today, because if we do, we should be at least halfway back up by friday. If we don't get our data back from our previous provider, it may take a little longer to come back live again, but we are working on it, so be patient. :-)
12:45 PST - IH
We are moving house. If the tubes run smoothly, we expect to be back in full swing tomorrow.
Opera fix to work with Google Reader - 9:25 pm
Browser , Guides , Internet - DaRen
I don't know why, it seems that the "Search King" Google and Microsoft doesn't like Opera. I can understand why Microsoft sort of hates Opera, and you can find alot of news and rumours on the dark side between Microsoft and Opera. However it seems that there is no negative news that shows Microsoft hates Firefox. For Google, I still remember GMail does not support Opera when it first open the service to public. Now the problem no longer exists. But then, Google Reader and Opera is not living in harmony. In Opera, the elements in Google Reader are cramped up together. Firefox is working fine on it. It seems like Google and Mozilla has some sort of alliance thing between them. Maybe open-source thing will always be the most attractive/peaceful ones among others eh ?
I'm a big fan of Opera for years, but I don't hate Firefox. I still use Firefox once in a while. However, it's just a pain in the ass (alright, maybe it's not that serious) to open Firefox specially for Google Reader, while using Opera to surf other websites. I use Google Reader almost everyday to read news/feeds. For Opera fans out there, here's a fix to make Opera to work perfectly with Google Reader :
- Download Reader.js (contributed by unknown coder)
- Visit Google Reader main page
- Go to Tools menu, select Quick Preferences -> Edit site preferences -> Scripting. Under the Use Javascript file, point that to the newly downloaded Reader.js
- Refresh the page and get ready to read thousands of feeds that you subscribed ;)
Enjoy ;)
DNS Propagation - 7:17 pm
uh, my windows is caching the DNS records too!
Computing , Internet , Site Issue , Web Hosting - DaRen
Rawwwrrrrrrrr ~~~~~~~ !! This site is finally up and running again
beh tong nia... I can't believe my lame ISP really took 72hrs to update their cache for DNS records ! Last week, my webhosting company actually planned to do some RAM upgrades for the server. Then in the middle, I'm sort of confused, but I think they moved some of the accounts to another new server/datacenter in US. So new server means new IP address. That also means http://ahkuan.com is pointing to another new IP address. The changes is made effective pretty quick in the top registration database and the webhosting's DNS servers, however, the so called DNS propagation process is causing all the mess around.
Let's go in plain english... You see, every ISP cache the master DNS records and read them locally instead of looking them up on the Internet each time someone wants to view a website. Some ISP fetch a new copy once every 24 hrs. However, some ISP (like the one that I'm using) they fetch a new copy once every 72 hrs... or even longer ! So even though the domain name ahkuan.com is already mapped to a new IP address in the top level domain servers, but your ISP's DNS cache is still pointing to the old IP address ! So there will be chaos... some will be viewing the most updated content on the new server but some will still be visiting the old content on old server. Unless everybody is using pure IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx instead of ahkuan.com, you'll probably have to wait up to 72hrs until your ISP refresh their DNS records cache.
It won't be surprised if you're still having problem to resolve to the correct address even after your ISP updated the cache. The problem might be your operating system is caching its own copy of DNS records. For windows user, go to command prompt, and type the following command:
This will flushes and resets the contents of the DNS client resolver cache. Try /displaydns to display the cache content.
Where is the cute donkey ?? - 12:31 pm
eDonkey is history ??
Internet , News - DaRen
Another file-sharing is targeted and ordered to shutdown by recording industries.
Quote:The firm behind popular online file-sharing software eDonkey has agreed to pay $30 million to avoid potential copyright infringement lawsuits from the recording industry, according to court documents filed Tuesday.
...
New York-based MetaMachine was one of seven technology firms to receive letters from the recording industry last fall warning them to shut down or prepare to face lawsuits.
...
Under terms of the latest agreement, MetaMachine and its top executives, Sam Yagan and Jed McCaleb, agreed to immediately cease distributing eDonkey, eDonkey 2000, Overnet and other software versions.
Sad ending I would say. $30 million to avoid lawsuits ? I guess that's another alternate way how the recording industries are making(milking) money. Anyway, on yesterday, the eDonkey website is wipe out clean, only leaving a message behind:
Quote:
The eDonkey2000 Network is no longer available.
If you steal music or movies, you are breaking the law.
Courts around the world -- including the United States Supreme Court --
have ruled that businesses and individuals can be prosecuted for illegal
downloading.
You are not anonymous when you illegally download copyrighted material.
Your IP address is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and has been logged.
Respect the music, download legally.
Goodbye Everyone.
Goodbye, eDonkey! I think LimeWire will joined you pretty soon since the recording companies filed a copyright infringement lawsuit LimeWire back in August.

Router sold us out to neighbours ! - 8:15 pm
what a router....
Internet , Personal , Security - DaRen
Internet connection speed got slowed lately, that sounds normal to some people if their quota from ISP is reached. But that's not the case to me. It' unsual. So the house owner login to the router and guess what ? An unknown computer has connected (wireless) to the router and gain access to internet, also stealing our bandwidth... moron neighbours ! Well, it's not that we have unsecured wireless opened for public usage. It's just that somehow the router screwed up and lost the WEP configuration while I last reboot it, which is quite a while ago. Our wireless network has gone public without our notice.
Now the house owner has got WEP authentication up again and sealing up the "backdoor" for any unauthorized access. Well, if that moron is smart enough, he can crack our WEP key and use our network as a reward for him (we didn't use MAC address filtering and the router's logging system is lame...hehe..)
Anyway, opening your wireless network as unsecured network which allows other people (or neighbours) to access the internet isn't really a bad thing too. You'll theoretically be able to share all of the music on P2P networks without worrying about an RIAA lawsuit.
Quote:
In fact, this even had some people suggesting that, if you want to win a lawsuit from the RIAA, you're best off opening up your WiFi network to neighbors. It seems like this strategy might actually be working. Earlier this month the inability to prove who actually did the file sharing caused the RIAA to drop a case in Oklahoma and now it looks like the same defense has worked in a California case as well. In both cases, though, as soon as the RIAA realized the person was using this defense, they dropped the case, rather than lose it and set a precedent showing they really don't have the unequivocal evidence they claim they do.
soure: Techdirt
In fact, there are people purposely turned off the security to avoid trouble. What can I say ? Crazy world with crazy people having crazy ideas in their crazy mind... everything is possible !
Ads banner on this site - 9:38 pm
Aren't they ugly and fat in size ?
Internet , Site Issue , Web Hosting - DaRen
Personally, I 101% don't like the ads banners that are placed on EVERY SINGLE page on my site. I don't have an option unless I pay $USD 0.99 per month to get rid of these ugly banner. I'm not sure since when they changed the banner content from "normal & healthy" banners to banners like "Meet SEXY Singles" or "Cheat At Online Poker" type of banners. I am aware that my hosting company 100Webspace has changed their marking/management strategy/style, but that's not the result I expected. But obviously one thing for sure is that they want to make more money through the new banners. Is that possible ?
I want to get my own domain name and ads free environment ! (there is no free lunch in this world...)
Mozilla Editor - 4:09 pm
Browser , Computing , Internet , Standards , Website Intro - DaRen
via woeisiong:
It seems that Mozilla is building it's own editor. I suppose that's a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web-based editor.
Quote:The Mozilla editor provides HTML and plain text editing functionality in Gecko-based applications.
This is a good thing to FireFox and other gecko-based browser... BUT, what about IE and Opera ?? They aren't gecko-based. Does that means that they will not be able to use it ?? hmm ??
I've seen a few WYSIWYG but most of them are pretty buggy. They all consist of "complicated and sophisticated" things (codes, lol) in it, but they have the problems of cross-browser-compatibility.
Anyway, aren't those WYSIWYG editor and BBCode tags exists solely for one purpose ? To make lazy people's life easier =)
Visit the Mozilla Editor and the live demo (Note: I got a feeling the demo page is out-dated).

E-mail to yourself 20 years later - 12:26 am
Cool Stuff , Internet , Personal , Website Intro - DaRen
Do you have anything to say to yourself after 20 years later ?? Check this out :
Quote (Wired News):
It's a time capsule of your thoughts, sent to yourself -- a future self, that is. A couple of young web entrepreneurs create a website that lets people send e-mail to themselves, 20 years hence.

I've just "send out" an e-mail, dated December 2006, to myself. I'll be sending an email to my 20-years-later me after I received the email next year.
