Guides , Software  -  poster

  2. File -> Set default password。

    密码

How to enable Gzip compression on output buffer - 12:59 pm
Browser , Coding , Guides , PHP  -  poster

I've been updating this site since last month. One of the things I added is able to serve gzip-encoded page. On top of that, my site is also able to serve gzip-encoded CSS and JS file heh Just scroll to the bottom of every page and you'll notice a line that says something like "Gzip enabled , CSS compressed , JS compressed". This will give an indication whether they are enabled or not. In other words, this will make pages load faster as well as saving some tiny bandwidth.

I've written a how-to thing that gives you an idea how to achieve that with PHP using ob_gzhandler(). For this to work you'll need the appropriate version of PHP, zlib extension and web browser that supports compressed web page.

Next topic will be on how to shrink, compress and cache CSS/JS files. Those who're using heavy AJAX and CSS styling will benefit from this.

Tip: Disable Auto Restart in Windows Update - 11:25 am
Guides  -  poster

Sometimes Windows Updates need to restart the computer to finish the installation. Before SP2, Automatic Updates would not restart your computer automatically. But this is not the case with SP2.

I've lost many downloads overnight for a few times and I can't stand this any more. Follow the below instructions to disable the auto restart in Windows Update:

For WindowsXP Pro users
  1. In the Start Menu go to Run type “gpedit.msc” and press Enter
  2. Now a Group Policy editor will open. In this window navigate to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Template -> Windows Components -> Windows Update
  3. Double click on No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations
  4. In the settings window Choose Enabled and click OK
  5. Close Group Policy Editor

For WindowsXP Home users
  1. Go to registry editor and navigate to the following registry key:
  2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Policies \Microsoft\Windows \WindowsUpdate\AU
  3. Change the “NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsersDWord value to the required number.

0 = False (Allow auto-reboot)
1 = True (Disallow auto-reboot)

The next time Windows updates your system it will not restart the computer automatically, but will notify you that restart is needed in order to finish the installation.

No to All for Windows "Confirm File Replace" dialog - 1:30 pm
I thought this is an "easter egg" thing from Bill Gates...
Guides  -  poster

Ever wonder why windows did not include the "No to All" button in the below picture ?

Windows Confirm File Replace dialog
Windows Confirm File Replace dialog

This dialog will appear in the middle of moving or copying a bunch of files to the destination (via Windows Explorer), where it got files that have same file name as the source.

It might be a pain in the ass to keep clicking the "No" button if you have tons of files that you don't want to be replaced due to some reasons. The worst part is you might even need to sit there for hours to catch any popup dialog because you don't know when it will popup and interrupt the process fear

So here is the new trick that I just learnt (I'm aware most of you might already knew this hundred years ago...):
To stimulate "No to All" function, press and hold the [SHIFT] key while you click the No button in the "Confirm File Replace" dialog.

That's what I called as cool-trick-no-jutsu heh

What you can bring in to Australia - 11:23 pm
Unofficial guide to let you "bypass" Australia custom...
Guides , Personal  -  poster

Australia Custom Quarantine
I'm back again, to a place where birds won't even lay eggs... oh well, that's not true... but you get the picture. Anyway, my luggage got checked thoroughly (i mean, undies by undies, if you still don't understand) by the quarantine officer when I'm going through the custom. Some of the items got confiscated after inspection. So I would share with you what I have brought and which one of it is ok and which isn't.

Things that's OK:
  • 义香豆沙饼(Ghee Hiang). I didn't buy (Him Heang) because of its loose packaging... but shouldn't be a problem when passing through custom since there is no egg in the ingredients.
  • Chinese New Year biscuits (Malaysia style) like 凤梨酥, that white colour cookie (I've asked a few friends, nobody knows the name -_-") Kuih Bangkit (thanks ynee). Also, Kuei Kah Phek should be fine too (I remember bringing that 2 years ago).
  • Bracelet that's made of wood pieces. Can't guarantee you can bring all kinds of bracelet made by wood, but most of them are ok. Don't ask me why, but this kind of things are consider as plant material and the quarantine officer loved to check them.
  • Curry powder and other kinds of powder. Cannot contain meat pieces/chunck.
  • DVD *cough*cough* is ok, don't bring too much like you're reselling them.

Things that's _NOT_ OK:
  • Milo (I believe most people already aware of this).
  • 3 in 1 instant coffee. Quarantine officer says it contains dairy product in the ingredients and therefore it's not allowed.
  • Biscuits and cookies that contain fruits are not allowed. However, 凤梨酥 is allowed. Again, don't ask me why.
  • Dried porridge. Most of them contains meat pieces/chunk that is not allowed.

Listing all pictures on a page using Javascript - 11:30 pm
Browser , Coding , Cool Stuff , Guides  -  poster

Found a cool trick to display (nearly) all pictures on the web page you currently browsing.
  1. Open your browser
  2. Visit the page by typing the address of the web page in the address bar and hit [ENTER]
  3. Once the page has finish loading, copy & paste the below code to the address bar and hit [ENTER]
    [ Hide ]
    [ Highlight ] [ Text ]
    javascript:Ai7Mg6P='';for%20(i7M1bQz=0;i7M1bQz<document.images.length;i7M1bQz++){Ai7Mg6P+='<img%20src='+document.images[i7M1bQz].src+'><br>'};if(Ai7Mg6P!=''){document.write('<center>'+Ai7Mg6P+'</center>');void(document.close())}else{alert('No%20images!')}

Firefox has its own media browser if you need something like that.

Slipstreaming Windows/Office with service packs - 9:42 am
Geez...Windows got more bugs than those in my backyard
Computing , Guides  -  poster

I just re-install (again) my windows on the weekend. I borrowed Roxio Creator CD (a burning software) from friend, install it, reboot windows, and realized my windows are screwed up. Windows are running extremely slow, many of the windows services are not running. I gave up... even the System Restore is unable to load up. This is the 2nd time in 2 weeks time I need to reinstall windows on my notebook.

So, it's backup time. Not much things (rubbish) to backup since this is still a pretty "fresh" copy of windows. But hey, the Copy & Paste, Drag & Drop, CTRL+C & CTRL+V ain't working confused ... Luckily the command prompt is still working, the good old copy and xcopy command saved the day =)

After going through the pain of windows update to get SP1 upgraded to SP2, I think it's a good idea to Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) to save myself some time in future. On top of that, you can Slipstreaming Microsfot Office (2003) with SP2 (or any version of Office you have)

However, you still need to do windows/office update after installation to get HotFixes and optional updates. You can "slipstreaming" HotFixes too, but it's way too complicated, you can search Microsoft's KnowledgeBase for more info or just leave the hard work to Windows Update =)

Internationalization internationalization ...
Guides , Software  -  poster

Are you still a Winamp die hard fan?

I have trouble getting Winamp 5.32 to display chinese song titles
I have trouble getting Winamp 5.32 to display chinese song titles
I've been using Winamp for almost 8 years, back to the time when I'm still in high school. Their simple and easy to use interface, minor resource usage and ability to display chinese song titles (in playlist) are the main reasons that makes me a loyal fan to it.

But not anymore, after I update my Winamp to version 5.32 yesterday night, I've trouble to get Winamp to display chinese song titles. SimHei font isn't doing the trick anymore, even tried font rendering settings on the modern skin and also throw in Microsoft AppLocale to aid the encoding thing but it just won't work. The weird thing is, v5.32 supports Unicode better than the old Winamp version I got but I can't understand why it won't work the way I want on the new version.

So, a friend intro me 千千静听. Best thing of this is, the player is using Simplified Chinese for the interface and encoding. That means it shouldn't have a problem to display chinese song titles in the playlist and in player. The downside is, it assume you're running on Simplified Chinese version of Windows. You'll still got trouble to display the chinese song titles if you're running a english version of WindowsXP.

To correct that and make life feels good, download Microsoft AppLocale utility. Install it and run it.
Once you got the utility running:
  • Choose "Launch an application"
  • Click "Browse..." to navigate to the 千千静听 folder and target TTPlayer.exe
  • Click Next, select
  • Click Next and choose "Create a shortcut"

Once you're done, there will be a shortcut added. You can always copy that shortcut and place it in QuickLaunch toolbar. Each time you need to run the player, just use the shortcut created by AppLocale. Depends on how your songs info are stored, if you still having trouble to display the song title, try this:
  • Click any song in the playlist
  • Right click and select
  • On the 读取类型优先级, change to ID3v1 > ID3v2 > APEv2

You should get something like below:
TTPlayer running in WinXP (EN)
TTPlayer running in WinXP (EN)

It's good when you can read and understand the song titles heh On top of that 千千静听 also has auto lyrics download and showing... what else do you need ? Life's good ~~~
